Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman has chosen Ravichandran Ashwin as his first spinner for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand.

There has been a lot of debate about whether India should compete with three quicks and the two spinners in Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, or whether they should just play a lonely spinner given the conditions in Southampton.

Speaking to Star Sports Cricket Connected, VVS Laxman explained why Ashwin would be his first choice for spins against the Kiwis. The 46-year-old cited the off-spinner’s dominance over the likes of Steve Smith Down Under as the reason he would choose Ashwin.

“Ashwin would be my first choice weirdo. The way he bowled in Australia, dominated the opponent’s best batsman in Steve Smith and consistently got him out, was one of the main reasons India won this Test series,” said VVS Laxman .

For me, Ravindra Jadeja is a complete package: VVS Laxman

VVS Laxman believes that Jadeja can be seen as a complete all-rounder for the WTC finals. Although his hitting power has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years, Laxman believes that Jadeja’s ability to fool batsmen on fields that may not offer a spin is something that makes him dangerous.

There was a time when Jadeja was ineffective on surfaces where there was no help for the weirdos. But Laxman thinks the all-rounder has improved his bowling and taken the pitch out of the equation and made himself a world-class all-rounder.

“You shouldn’t forget Ravindra Jadeja either. He’s not just a weirdo who will only bowl under helpful conditions. In recent years he has improved immensely in defeating the batsmen with his cunning, his flight, his variation and his pace. I feel it is a complete package for me, “concluded VVS Laxman.
