Former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer believes Suryakumar Yadav should get a chance in the third Test between India and England in Headingley, Leeds.

Suryakumar has been in sensational form in limited formats lately and Engineer believes he would do well in red ball cricket too.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane are unlikely to be replaced as their crucial 100-run score in the second innings of the Second Test was instrumental in India setting England on an unassailable target.

Speaking to Sports Tak, however, Farokh Engineer explained why he thought Suryakumar Yadav would be a better option than Pujara or Rahane.

“First of all, I’m a huge fan of Suryakumar Yadav. I think he’s a top-notch player. I would definitely prefer him to Pujara or Rahane. They are top-tier players, very good players, but Suryakumar Yadav is a match winner.”

“He’s an aggressive player; he’ll give you a quick hundreds, a quick 70-80. He’s a fabulous batsman, fabulous outfield player and a wonderful person too.”

Suryakumar Yadav is a trump card in the team: Engineer

Many might feel that Suryakumar Yadav would be driven into testing cricket if given the opportunity, having just completed his quarantine a few days ago. However, Farokh Engineer believes his addition to the team will be valuable.

Suryakumar Yadav has already shown in white ball cricket that he has the versatility to hit in any position and that could come in handy given the inconsistent shape of India’s middle class.

Engineer said:

“People are usually reluctant to change a winning combination, but as they say ‘horses for courses’. It depends on the wicket at Headingley. I don’t see it that differently.

“The Headingley pitch will be a good test wicket. It is considered to be one of the best pitches in the world. So I would like to see Suryakumar Yadav. He is the trump card on the team.”

Only time will tell whether Suryakumar Yadav will get his chance in the third test or whether he will have to wait a little longer.
