Compared to the previous month, both PPIs and mobile wallets saw a decline in transaction numbers in April, but the average transaction amounts signaled an upward trend.

Digital payment transactions via prepaid payment instruments – which include both mobile wallets and PPI cards together – totaled 476.2 million transactions at the end of April 2021, an increase of 128% compared to 208.6 million transactions in the previous year. However, according to data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the total value of PPI transactions increased 130% to Rs 22,148 billion by the end of April 2021, compared to Rs 9,648 billion the previous year.

From April 2020, there was a slump in PPI transactions as the country was locked to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Total transactions are still below their pre-COVID levels as the highest number of PPI transactions was recorded in January 2020.

Mobile wallet transactions are up 115% year over year (YoY), up from 184 million transactions reported in April 2020. The total amount processed using mobile wallets decreased 3% to Rs 14,421 in April 2021. On a YoY basis, total mobile wallet transactions increased 66% from Rs 8,693 billion in April 2020.

The number of transactions for PPIs (Wallets + PPI Cards) decreased by 39.3 million in April 2021, while the total amount of transactions decreased by 776 billion rupees from the previous month.


The number of transactions for mobile wallets decreased by 22 million from the previous month in April 2021, while the total amount decreased by 435 billion rupees over the same period. In March 2021, the number of transactions increased by 53 million while the transaction amount grew by 2,114 billion rupees.

The average amount per transaction for PPIs rose to 465 rupees in April 2021. It’s an upward trend with an increase in the transaction amount while the The average amount per transaction for mobile wallets was Rs 364.
