Indian judo star Sushila Devi will open her campaign for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games against Eva Csernoviczki. Devi represents India in judo for women over 48 kg and is the only Indian judoka at the Tokyo games. The Tokyo Games are Sushila Devi’s first Olympic Games.
Sushila Devi’s opening game is expected to be tough. Eva Csernoviczki is a former Olympic medalist. Csernoviczki won a bronze medal in the women’s 48 kg category at the Olympic Games in London and is thus significantly better placed than Sushila Devi.
Eva Csernoviczki is number 24 in the world while Sushila Devi is number 46 in the world. The last time the two horns were locked, Eva Csernoviczki defeated Sushila Devi. It will only be more difficult for the Indian when she defeats Eva Csernoviczki in the round of 32.
Sushila Devi will have a tough campaign in Tokyo 2020
In the next round, Sushila Devi will likely meet the Japanese Funa Tonaki. The Japanese is a former world champion and won two silver medals at the 2018 and 2018 world championships. Tonaki also won silver at the IJF World Masters that year.
According to the judo rules at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the best seeds in each weight class will be released in the first round. That makes Funa Tonaki’s life easier.
Sushila Devi’s claim to fame was at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she made it to the finals. In the title fight she lost to the local judoka Kimberly Renicks and was awarded the silver medal.
In 2018, Sushila Devi suffered a hamstring injury that forced her to miss the Asian Games, plunging the judoka into depression.
However, Sushila Devi fought her demons and fought hard for a place in the 2020 Olympics. Her trainer Jiwan Sharma also believes that her aggressive mindset can cause a surprise.
