Switzerland beat Turkey 3-1 in an entertaining match at UEFA Euro 2020. With the win, the Swiss still has a chance of making it into the round of 16 in Group A.
After a brilliant start to the game, it was Turkey who saw the first goal sight within 5 minutes. Burak Yilmaz put the ball with his chest on Irfan Kahveci, whose powerful long-range shot was well parried by Yann Sommer.
Minutes later, after a centimeter-accurate finish from Haris Seferovic, Switzerland took the lead. The Benfica striker picked up the ball from Steven Zuber on the edge of the box and unleashed a crisp left-footed shot that hit the lower right corner.
The Swiss doubled their lead in the 26th minute with another breathtaking goal. Zuber got another assist when his discharge found Xherdan Shaqiri. The Liverpool man skilfully steered a right foot into the top right corner from outside the penalty area. Minutes later, Shaqiri almost added another after a quick counterattack by the Swiss. This time, however, the Turkish goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir failed with his right foot.
The Turks fought their way back into the game. A brilliant long-range shot by Mert Muldur forced Sommer to make another great save and dived deep to his right. He got close again when he ran over the left wing and let another shot go, but was again blocked by the Swiss goalkeeper. The teams went into halftime in this decisive match at the EM 2020 with the Swiss 2-0 lead.
Euro 2020: Turkey strikes back in the second half
Although Switzerland looked largely comfortable, it was Turkey that scored the first goal in the second half to open the game. Another great long-range shot, this time from Irfan Kahveci, hit Sommer on his way into the upper left corner. The goal was Turkey’s first at Euro 2020.
When the game was balanced, the Swiss put pressure back on. Turkey eventually collapsed when Shaqiri scored his second goal to make it 3-1. After another striking counterattack, the 29-year-old shot the ball home with his left foot to bring the game to bed.
The result was that Switzerland took third place in Group A of Euro 2020 with four points. Second-placed Wales also got four points, but thanks to the better goal difference, he sealed the direct entry into the round of 16. The Swiss will have to wait and see if they qualify for the group stage of Euro 2020 as one of the four best teams in third place.
Turkey, on the other hand, will return home after a gloomy Euro 2020 in which they lost 3-0 to Italy, 2-0 to Wales and 3-1 to the Swiss.
