In Genshin Impact, Ajax, now known as Tartaglia or Childe, is a Fatui harbinger with extraordinary abilities in combat.
Childe was not always the warrior he is today. Its backstory is much more detailed than the Liyue story suggests.
Genshin Impact’s story pages allow players to learn about Childe’s life before he became a harbinger.
The story of Ajax in Genshin Impact
As a child, the 11th Fatui Harbinger did not have the names “Childe” and “Tartaglia”, which he now bears. His father named him Ajax after a heroic story.
Ajax and his father often went ice fishing together, cutting in the ice to find a fishing spot, and tending their fishing lines. During these family bond moments, Ajax’s father would often share his past adventures. Ajax would take these stories to heart and envision the same lifestyle.
At 14, Ajax left the house with only a short sword and a bag of bread. He wasn’t very good at combat at the time, but that was soon to change.
Ajax got lost in a snowy forest and was followed by dangerous animals. As he ran away, he slipped and fell into a crack in the earth. There Ajax found himself in a dark realm separated from the normal world.
A strange swordsman in this realm looked after Ajax for three months and forged him into a warrior. It had only been three days in the real world, but he would return home with a passion for conflict and battle.
Wherever Ajax went, violence followed. Eventually his father gave him the Fatui in hopes that military life would ease his domination. However, this did not go as planned.
Ajax’s ability to dispose of enemy troops when he was a teenager caught the attention of the 5th Harbinger, Pulcinella. The harbinger made Ajax an official Fatui member, although he had to work his way up from below.
Ajax defeated powerful enemies in the service of the tsarina and eventually became the youngest harbinger in Fatui history. With the new title he earned the nickname “Childe” Tartaglia.
At some point in Ajax’s service with the Fatui, the cryo-archon Zaritsa gave him his delusion. The fool, the very first Fatui, put an old badge on him when he swore allegiance to the Archon.
Though he’s one of the strongest harbingers, Tartaglia doesn’t always look at eye level with his peers. The Fatui have a penchant for deception, while Childe prides itself on keeping his word. Since the 11th Harbinger is still followed by chaos, the Fatui often send him far away from Snezhnaya to avoid the chaotic consequences.
There is good reason to suspect that Tartaglia will reappear later in the plot of Genshin Impact. It’s likely that The Traveler will see him again once they reach Scheznaya, which could be years away. Since Childe is often active elsewhere, according to Genshin Impact lore, players can of course see him at any time.
