England secured first place in Group D with a 1-0 win in the final group game of Euro 2020 against the Czech Republic.
Both teams went into this game with four points. England beat Croatia 1-0 and drew 0-0 against Scotland, while the Czechs beat Scots 2-0 and Croatia drew 1-1. Despite the almost even score, England looked wild at the start and hit the post within 2 minutes. Luke Shaw picked Raheem Sterling, who praised the goalkeeper only to see his shot bounce off the post before being scraped away.
England deservedly took the lead in the 12th minute. Jack Grealish picked up the ball on the left and tapped a cross into the box. The delivery was hit by Sterling, who headed the ball to his and England’s second goal at Euro 2020. The Three Lions almost scored another goal a few minutes later, but Harry Kane’s attempt was well saved by Tomas Vaclik in the Czech goal.
As the half-time progressed, the Czech Republic grew into the game and began to find some openings. First, Tomas Holes forced Jordan Pickford to make a great save with a powerful shot from a distance. Tomas Soucek came close next when the ball fell nicely into the box for him, but his shot went wide, wide of the left post.
Euro 2020: England win in the second half
While the second half was largely uneventful, England believed they had doubled their lead in the 86th minute. After a good job by Marcus Rashford on the right, Jude Bellingham helped an attempted Czech get in the way of Jordan Henderson. The shot of the Liverpool skipper landed in the net. However, the goal was ruled out for offside and Henderson’s wait for his first England goal was extended.
The result remained 1-0 in the final phase and meant that England moved into the round of 16 of the EURO 2020 as winners of Group D. You will compete against the team that takes second place in Group F, the slang term “group of death”.
The results elsewhere meant that the Czech Republic has also secured a place in the knockout stage of Euro 2020. You will go into the last sixteen as one of the four best third-placed finishers.
