Lionel Messi’s current contract with Barcelona expires on July 1st. The BBC claim that contrary to recent reports, the Catalans are yet to need to reach an agreement with Messi on a new deal. The club want to announce the contract extension before the beginning of July and are urging Messi to write.

Messi’s contract extension brings some complications. Barcelona reportedly have to cut their wage bills by € 200m. If they meet Messi’s demands, they’ll have to sell a few stars to balance their payroll.

The report adds that Joan Laporta is ready to offer Messi a two-year deal. The club are reportedly aware of Messi’s desire to play in the MLS after the 2022 Qatar World Cup. But they want him to return to the club in whatever capacity he chooses afterwards.

Barcelona scour the market for a left-back. They are looking for a long-term replacement for Jordi Alba so far connected to an output. His current deputy, Junior Firpo, is also due to be fired this summer.

Marcos Alonso almost fell out of Chelsea under Frank Lampard. Under the new coach Thomas Tuchel, however, he appeared more often. As per Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have expressed an interest in the Spanish left-back.

It is alleged that Barcelona struck a personal agreement with Alonso back in January. However, the move did not materialize. The 30-year-old failed to impress as a full-back at Chelsea. But he’s one of the best full-backs in the world and a much better player when his main role is to attack.
