Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has reportedly said the club are trying to get rid of him this summer amid Liverpool’s interest.

Saul has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool looking to sign the Spaniard to replace Gini Wijnaldum in the squad.

The Dutchman ended his five-year stint at the club with a free transfer and his absence will be felt as an integral part of Jürgen Klopp’s side.

Saul has been one of the most consistent players for Atletico Madrid in recent years. However, the club wants to fire him to raise money.

Atletico Madrid have already signed Udinese’s Rodrigo De Paul and he is expected to take Saul’s place on the squad.

When Saul was asked by a group of supporters during pre-season for an update on his future, he said:

“You’re throwing me out of here, man.”

Liverpool have to fend off competition from Barcelona to Saul. to oblige

Barcelona are currently trying to cut their wage bills and the Blaugrana have been linked to a Saul move where Antoine Griezmann would go the other way.

Griezmann is currently the club’s highest earner, Lionel Messi is no longer under contract with Barcelona.

It remains to be seen whether Saul will be interested in joining Liverpool in case they make an offer. The midfielder might like the chance to stay in Spain.

Liverpool will have to pay at least £ 35m to sign Saul. That’s not a high price, but the Reds want to sell a few players first to reinvest that money to sign new faces.

Saul is still 26 years old and would be a good long-term replacement for Wijnaldum. He is not prone to injury and would fit well into Liverpool midfield.

The Reds will be hoping to get the deal across the line and slap Barcelona into Saul’s signature as he would be a good acquisition in an otherwise inflated transfer market.
